In 2015, researchers from National ICT Australia (NICTA) collaborated with Speech Pathologists and teaching staff at RFWS to create a virtual interface for remote speech pathology intervention, teacher training and mentoring. The interface was designed to be highly motivating, culturally inclusive and child-friendly. It provides state-of-the-art audio and video working across all platforms.

Successful trials of remote speech pathology intervention were completed with targeted students (k-2) at Bowraville Central School. The students were supported by a classroom teacher’s aide during each session. This helped to build the knowledge and skill set of the teaching staff involved. Speech Pathologists worked together with teachers to support the implementation of a range of evidence-based oral language strategies within the classroom.

The NICTA interface eventually evolved into COVIU, an all-in-one virtual care engagement platform, and continues to be used to deliver the SWAY targeted intervention program within our rural and remote sites.
